"Goot
Eeefening, tonight somevone here vill DIE!" So started a typical
spook show, a blend of horror and magic that took America by storm in
the 40's and 50's. Most always performed in a movie theatre, usually at
midnight, and often with hook gimmicks like "sawing a girls arm off"
(blood and all) and "Bringing the dead back to life" (spooky
stage illusions that sometimes took place in total darkness with illuminated
"spirits" whisking over patrons heads). Spook shows always played
on a Horror movie bill, making for a truly chilling cinematic experience!
It has been said that the birth of the television horror host led to the
demise of this entertaining if not sometimes schlocky spectacle. Perhaps
it just resurrected itself as the modern Halloween 'Haunted House'. Never
the less, all that remains of the original theatre spook show is a legacy
of posters and ephemera. The graphics - printed on cheap paper and flimsy
cardboard - were never meant to last past a season, or even a show, but
today the 'all things that haunt our nightmares' images have become influential
art pieces. It is in this vein (so to speak), that we offer this collection
of posters and related for your Halloween bag. Dig it. 6' Deep.
